Extractions. For or Against? Or Both?

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

While I was away from my own blog I spent a whole lot of time reading others.  I loved this post from one of my favorite beauty blogs, Well and Good NYC, about the pro’s and con’s of professional extractions.  I happen to fall into the “pro” extractions category, and agree very much with what Jillian Wright says in the article.  Thick, hard clogs of sebum are not going to wash away, and when done properly extractions are not damaging to the skin.  It is wonderful to leave a facial with noticeable smoother and clearer skin.

Although it is typical in the US for facial clients to prefer services that offer extractions, Decleor’s protocol doesn’t traditionally include them(being a French based company).  At SANO we also offer an Aromassage facial which focuses entirely on Lymphatic Drainage, a la the “anti” stance.  Is is an amazing service, and the lymphatic drainage massage has many wonderful benefits with clear skin being just one of them.  This type of massage moves congestion away from the eyes and sinuses which can reduce puffiness, relieve headaches and reduce the effects of allergies.

There are great arguments of both side of the issue, and although the Well and Good post focuses on the extremes, I think there is an important balance that can be reached.  I believe that offering extractions isn’t working “against” the skin just as much as I believe that extractions can be uncomfortable and unnecessary if someone isn’t struggling with clogging.  It is so important to consider exactly what the skin really needs and go forward from there.

A Winter Special…Renew in the New Year!

Monday, January 11th, 2010

Although the winter in Vermont is beautiful, the cold air and drying indoor heat is not kind to our skin.  Deep winter is an important time to take steps to heal and protect our skin for the coming months.  In the spirit of feeling refreshed and renewed in the New Year, I would like to encourage you all to do something good for yourself.  And of course here at SANO, we want to help you do something good for your skin and your soul.

Decleor’s AromaExpert facials are designed to target specific skin concerns and can help nourish, detox, soothe and refresh.  What a nice way to start a new decade!

Your skin may feel dull and dehydrated from cozying up by a warm fire.  Decleor’s Expert Hydra Force mask uses apple pectin to soften and soothe itchy skin and orange powder as a source of vitamin C to add radiance.  Perhaps your skin is feeling congested after many late nights and celebrations with family and friends.  The Mate and Pure Expert mask uses tea tree to put an end to inflammation and breakouts, willow extract (which contains salicylic acid) to refine skin’s texture and white lotus flower to to purify by balancing bacterial flora.  Or maybe being out on the mountain has left your skin red and overly sensitised.  The Harmonie Extreme Expert mask calls on essential oils of chamomile, marjoram, lavender, neroli and rose to soothe and calm while kudzu extract works to block the mechanisms that trigger sensitivity reactions.

For the month of January come in and enjoy a free Expert Mask upgrade to any 1 hour facial, or take advantage of the free mask with an hour and half service and pay only $115 (a $20 savings!).  The Expert Masks offer highly targeted and effective ingredients to address any skin concern. If you are not sure which mask or nourishing facial treatment is right for you don’t worry!  A skin consultation is included in each facial service.  Don’t forget we also offer free 10 minute skin consultations and are always happy to discuss personal skin questions in the store, on the phone or via e-mail.

Even in the cold and dry winter, your skin can look and feel it’s best!  Call to discuss any questions you may have, and set up an appointment to renew and relax.  Start your new year by doing something great for yourself.

Decleor in the News!

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

Every month Decleor gets highlighted in all kinds of publications and on television programs, but there are a couple of mentions this month that we at Sano are really excited about.

The Early Show on CBS highlighted treatment serums and Decleor’s Aromessence Rose as a crucial part of a healthy skincare routine in their new segment “Search for the Perfect Skin”.

Also, Pregnancy and Newborn, a national publication aimed at pregnant women and new mothers featured Aromessence Angelique as a way to sooth skin and keep it hydrated during the cold winter months.

The Aromessense products have always been a favorite of mine, so seeing them featured is very exciting!  For those who are unfamilier, the Aromessences are 100% natural blends of essential oils aimed at targeting a specific skin concern.  The can be layered with any moistuizer, and enhance the benefits of what ever you are putting on top.  Set up a free 10 min skin consultation at Sano, and try a sample of the Aromessence that is best for your skin.  With this falling snow and dry air, your skin will thank you!

Welcome!

Seven years ago a good friend gave me some of the best advice I have ever received. I had graduated from college and was in a relationship I knew was going to last. I was working at a job I loved and doing it well. But still I felt a bit lost. What my friend told me that day when I explained my dilemma to her was, “You never actually arrive at anything in life, you just take the next step”. She said it in such an off-handed, matter-of-fact way, there was no denying she was right.

So, I decided my next step would be to attend Esthetics school. I had always been interested in skincare and when the opportunity to move to Boston to attend the Elizabeth Grady Institute presented itself I jumped on the chance. After returning home to Vermont I took a job working at a local spa and loved it. I also continued working as a manager for a retail shop and my two chosen careers fit together perfectly. I spent my days making women look and feel great.

Three years later I got a call from another friend of mine, a doctor, who had a big plan. Her goal was to build a wellness center, something unlike anything available to people in Vermont at the time. Her plan was huge and she wanted me to be a part of it; this was clearly the next step I was meant to take. Having worked in both a busy spa while managing a successful retail shop, opening SANO Skincare & Apothecary seemed like a perfect scenario; the combination of both of my passions. Being able to open my spa in Eastern View Integrative Medicine with like-minded practitioners dedicated to whole health only made the decision that much easier.

In my years of working in the skincare industry I have really been able to affirm my beliefs about what taking care of ourselves really means. Looking young and feeling great inside and out rarely needs to involve harsh chemicals and toxic ingredients. Our skin naturally wants to do the right thing if we treat it the right way. I was thrilled to find a professional skincare line that agreed wholly with my vision of what I wanted SANO to be about. Decleor’s philosophy is based in “harmony with yourself and your environment, revealing the natural expression of your beauty and giving you radiant skin”, the very same tenets that SANO is built upon.

SANO is a place for me to preach about my passion and help others. I am thrilled to have a platform from where I can tell people not only is it not simply vanity to want take care of your skin, it’s an important component of whole-body health. Skincare goes far beyond being a treat you can give yourself for your birthday (although, it is a great way to celebrate each year!).  Simply the act of lying on the table before a service and taking a minute to relax has proven benefits, and that is only the beginning! When the body is healthy and in harmony with it’s parts the skin shows it. Conversely, self care can help restore harmony within the body.  Furthermore, a good skincare regimen can have mental health benefits as well. People generally feel more comfortable when they are happy with their appearance. Truly the effects of skincare are much more than skin deep.

This blog will be an extension of that platform mentioned above. I hope to educate people about the things I know, offer tips for things I know will make a difference in your skin and perhaps I will learn a few things from the questions you ask me. If there is anything specifically you would like to know more about, please ask! My passion is helping you look and feel your best and I want to share information to that end.
Be well,
Shannon
