One More Reason to Try and Stay Calm this Summer

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

I have been inspired lately to write about the many ways that staying calm can improve the health of our skin…I wonder if I should take it as a sign that I need some slowing down.  Summer is a time to relax and enjoy life!

The latest way this message has come to me is through an article in the latest Whole Living.  It doesn’t seem to be available to read online yet, but the idea is that stress reduction can boost skin’s UV resilience.  The Journal of the National Cancer Institute has found that stressed mice are more likely to develop skin cancers.  It is has been shown that chronic stress weakens the immune system leaving the body less able to defend itself against the free radicals the sun causes in the skin.

This also is coming at a good time since I have been taking my own advise and exercising to help myself stay mentally and physically limber.  I can add this to the list of benefits to running outside!  Not only is running keeping me in shape, I am also reducing my stress… which is amping up my skin’s natural defences.

I said it before, and I’ll say it again, summer is a time to relax and love life.  So, be smart about your sun exposure and make sure you are always protected…But get out and enjoy the season and all it has to offer.  Relaxing is as good for your skin as it is for your soul!

It’s as Simple as a Brow Wax.

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

There are very few things in the health and beauty world that can make an instantaneous improvement to the way a person looks or feels, and this is exactly why brow waxing is such a amazing service.  A good brow shaping can take up to 30 minutes, but in that time your face is transformed.  Cleanly arched brows lift the whole face while opening and brightening the eyes.  The shape of the eye brows doesn’t have to change drastically - gone are the days of the pencil thin and barely there look.  Simply cleaning up the edges looks more streamlined groomed.  If more shaping is done, the result should still be a natural, defined arch that enhances the shape of the eye and the whole face.

Now that the sun is shining, take a few minutes to liven up your look!  We know tanning is out these days ( ! ) so something simple like a brow wax is a great way to feel updated for the summer months.

Sweating – Good or Bad for Your Skin?

Monday, June 21st, 2010

I recently wrote a post on how exercising can improve the health of your skin by reducing the amount of stress hormones in the body.  The gym is not the only place we sweat though, and as temperatures heat up I am having more and more people asking about the effects of sweating on the skin and whether it is a benefit to detoxify, or if it actually causes more breakouts.

Our bodies really only produce sweat for one reason and that is to regulate our temperature by cooling us down.  It is true that sweating also has detoxifying effect but this is not the main benefit of this capability.  Additionally, sweat and oil glands on the skin are separate.  Sebaceous glands attached to the hair follicles all over the body produce the oil that protects our skin, and if clogged can result in breakouts.  We have an additional 3 million sweat glands so producing more sweat has little effect on the amount of oil that is produced - and more sweat does not equate to clearer pores.

In fact sweat (whether it is during exercise or simply due to hot temperatures) leaves behind salt on the skin when the water evaporates.  This can irritate acne prone skin as well as dry or dehydrated skin.  It is best to wash your face as soon as possible after sweating, but as always, it is important not to over cleanse your skin.  It is best to rinse with lukewarm water and use a soft cloth to buff away build up.  If skin is not too dry or prone to dehydration a gentle cleanser can be used.

Life is full of beauty. Notice it. Notice the bumble bee, the small child, and the smiling faces. Smell the rain, and feel the wind. Live your life to the fullest potential, and fight for your dreams.

I recently wrote a post about one of my most favorite foods, avocados, and how eating them can help keep your skin healthy.  This is a fun list of additional foods to include in your diet to improve and protect your skin.  I love that the site offers a food suggestion as well as sharing the key nutrient and how it can effect your skin.   Eat up and enjoy!
