The “Tipping Point”

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

The Magazine Women’s Health included an article in their current issue titled “The Beauty Tipping Point“.  Although I think that they tend to be a bit heavy handed in recommending retinoids as a cure-all to age related skin changes, I do think that they make a number of good points.  It is important to recognise that life has a cumulative effect on the skin and when we reach our 30’s our skin’s natural defences are weakened.

“The majority of hormone changes start around age 30,” explains Beverly Hills endocrinologist Eva Cwynar, M.D. Because we’re engineered to have babies in our teens and twenties, our reproductive hormone levels begin to taper off in our thirties, which can result in hair loss and funky skin conditions. Human growth hormone, or HGH, begins to peter out too, which means cells don’t turn over as quickly. This puts the brakes on collagen production, giving way to dull, slack skin. “When we’re 18, our growth hormone levels may be around 800. By 30, they’ve dropped to 150. It’s normal. It’s just how we age,” assures Cwynar.

Whether you begin to notice these changes in your skin in your 30’s or in your 50’s it is incredibly important to realize that what you do today will reflect in your skin tomorrow.  But please also realize this is also true for positive steps you take!  Taking care of your skin before you feel like you “really need it” can soften the effects of aging and help you feel and look your best at any age.

Have you done something good for your skin today?

Tanning Tax

Monday, December 21st, 2009

Check out this article detailing what a tax on tanning might mean for the current healthcare debate as well as the health of our country.  The tax on tanning is being proposed as an alternative to the tax on elective cosmetic surgery.  In a cutting statement John Overstreet, executive director of the Indoor Tanning Association says this tax is shifting the cost of healthcare to already struggling small businesses.

“It is not surprising that one primarily cosmetic business is trying to throw another under the bus by transferring a tax from rich doctors and their wealthy customers to struggling small businesses”

This may be so, but I have to agree wholeheartedly with what Solmaz Poorsattar writes.

“The scientific research we have…reveals an undeniable link between skin cancer and ultraviolet light exposure from indoor tanning lamps. Just this past July, the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer confirmed that artificial tanning devices, similar to excessive sun exposure and cigarette smoking, indeed belong in the highest category of potential cancer risk, “carcinogenic to humans.”

A tax on indoor tanning would also prove to be more than just sin taxation, or the government’s way of controlling undesirable behavior. We know that tanning is a major contributor to the development of skin cancer, and therefore a behavior that is costly to the healthcare system. The American Academy of Dermatology Association and the Society for Investigative Dermatology estimate the total annual direct costs in the treatment of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers to be $30 million and $1.5 billion respectively.

This tax, then, will justly require those who place a greater financial burden on society by indulging in a recognized and preventable unhealthy behavior to be taxed extra to pay for these costs.”

The article goes on to say the idea is not being seriously discussed as of yet, but SANO would like to offer our support!

Friday Thought

Friday, December 11th, 2009

I recently stumbled on a print of one of my favorite poems, and it reminded me how beautiful words can be.  I thought I would share it with all of you.

I Carry Your Heart With Me

i carry your heart with me(i carry it in
my heart)i am never without it(anywhere
i go you go,my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing,my darling)
i fear
no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet)i want
no world(for beautiful you are my world,my true)
and it’s you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you

here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows
higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that’s keeping the stars apart

i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)

Sano’s Holiday Special

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

Happy Holidays everyone!

I hope the season has been treating you well so far!  I am glad to see some snow on the ground in time for the winter festivities - even though I feel torn about whether I want to get outside and enjoy it…or curl up under a blanket with some hot chocolate.  Both are more enjoyable when there are some white flakes around!

It is in the sprit of feeling busy and torn that Sano would like to make a special offer for the month of December.  We are offering a buy one gift certificate and receive a second gift certificate at 1/2 price!  Of course you can share the wealth any way you like, but the thought is that you could save one for yourself and take some time to take care of YOU this holiday season.

There is no better gift than the inspiration to do something kind for yourself, and you can use this special deal on as many gifts as would like.  Sano gift certificates make wonderful gifts for moms, sisters, best friends, teachers, co-workers or anyone you think may benefit from a bit of relaxation.  Additionally, this time of year when the weather changes, it is so important to give your skin a little boost to help it transition.  Professional exfoliation and extra hydration makes all the difference in keeping your skin healthy and glowing.

We at Sano are wishing you all health and happiness throughout the busy month to come, and a fabulous New Year!
