Summer is Here in VT!

June 7th, 2011

We all know we should be wearing sunscreen every day and all year, but the shining sun is a great reminder to take stock of what you are using to make sure it is the best product for what you need.  Here are two well thought out lists of brands and ingredients to look for to get great sun protection.

And for more information about what sunscreen really is, what it does and why we should be looking out for, take a look back at some of Sano’s blogs from last summer.

Picking at Your Skin

March 3rd, 2011

Are you guilty?  Well&Good NYC proposes this scenario -

“You’re looking into a magnifying mirror. You think your pores look huge and dirty. And you start to squeeze, and squeeze, and squeeze. The next day there’s a scab, a lump that hurts to the touch, and no doubt some regret.”

This is a conversation I have with clients here at Sano over and over again.  I encourage everyone to get rid of magnifying mirrors.  Our skin is covered with hair follicles and pores, and there is often patches of dead skin and/ or a breakout or two.  Under most circumstances you would never know…I assure you, no one’s skin looks flawless magnified fifteen times.

But once you start picking it is hard to stop and can be habit forming.  Well&Good NYC brings up the point that picking can also be a symptom of a larger emotional issue such as anxiety or depression.  The consequence is redness, scabs, infection and permanent scaring that lasts long after any breakout would have healed.  So please be gentle with yourself!

Questions About Waxing

February 11th, 2011

Recently I had a new client ask me a number of questions about what to expect during her first Brazilian wax appointment.  I though I would share our email exchange in case others are wondering about the waxing process.  And the questions and answers apply to the waxing of any body part so if you’ve ever wondered about waxing at all…here is the info!

Q : I am wondering if you do Brazilian waxing?! I’m curious about it.

A : I do do Brazilian waxing here…have you had any waxing done before? I always tell people it is not as bad as they think it might be! I use what is called a “hard wax”. Instead of being sticky it shrink-wraps around the hair as it dries and it doesn’t stick to the skin at all. It is much more gentle than traditional strip wax which is super sticky and removed with a muslin cloth.

Q : No, I’ve never had it done, I’ve heard its painful, but I am willing to give it a try! I do have a couple questions: How often would I need to wax? How long do I need to grow my hair out first?

A :  If you haven’t had it done before, the first time might be a little painful, but nothing too terrible. And waxing damages the hair follicle, so the hair that it produces next is finer, weaker and lighter in color. It is noticeable even after just one appointment…so the 2nd time and onward is much less painful each time.  And in terms of time…people usually come for waxing every 4-8 weeks. It depends on how “on top of it” you want to be, how fast your hair grows and how long you have been waxing. The hair on your body grows in separate phases, so the first time you come we may only grab the first phase of growth and the second may come up in a few weeks. The second time you come we would grab both of those phases of growth, so the time between regrowth is longer. As a person gets on a regular schedule the time increases. It is good to start now, so that by the summer we have a really good idea of how long it takes to grow back.

For your fist wax you want the hair to be at least 1/4 of an inch. People are often nervous about the idea of having regrowth before each wax but the hair that grows back after a wax is very different than after shaving. It is a new hair, so it is tapered and soft instead of blunt because shaving chops hair off at the widest part of the shaft. And like I said above, it is finer and lighter due to the damaged hair follicle. Eventually some doesn’t come back at all!
